The mortar is made from a log that was hollowed out and has a blackened bottom to seal the |
end grain. There is a hand-forged iron ring on the bottom of the mortar. The mortar has a |
leather handle. The pestle is wooden with a leather braid fastened about 1/4 of the way up |
from the working end. This might have had a maritime use for mixing caulking. |
